What is NITI AAYOG?

Full form of NITI Aayog is National Institution for Transforming India. As per the vision of our Prime Minister, India needs a dynamic and futuristic government think-tanks which works as an effective catalyst to realise the goals set by the Government. The definition given below will give you a clear understanding of its full form.

NITI Aayog is a policy think-tank of the Government of India, established with the aim to achieve cooperative federalism and ensure participative governance. It provides both directional and policy inputs. Niti Aayog was formed after scrapping of the Planning Commission which followed the principle of command economy.

What are its objectives?

The main objectives of NITI Aayog are:

Providing critical directional and policy support to help evolve a shared vision of national development priorities, sectors and strategies

Ensuring effective co-ordination between the Centre and states on key issues of national importance

Fostering cooperative federalism through structured support to the state governments, in order to accelerate the implementation of their policies and programmes

Mobilising both public and private resources for rapid transformation of India

Monitoring and overseeing significant areas of national importance such as education, water resources , health care and sanitation.

NITI Aayog has also been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing National Rurban Mission.

How is it funded?

NITI Aayog has not been granted any express power to levy or collect tax.

Who are its members?

Members of NITI Aayog include Prime Minister, Union Ministers viz. Finance, Railways, Home Affairs and Agriculture & Farmers welfare, Chief Ministers of all the states and Lt. Governors of Union Territories (except Delhi and Puducherry) and a few other special invitees.

What is its proposed structure?

As on date, NITI Aayog has three full-time members and one ex-officio member who is the cabinet secretary. The government has decided to constitute an Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister which will be chaired by Bibek Debroy. Other members of the EAC will be from various fields and will serve a term of three years in this prestigious assignment.
