What do you mean by LED?

What is the basic principle of an LED?
An LED emits light with a built-in electric current. There are two semiconductors, an n-type and a p-type, in an LED. The junction area of the semiconductors is called a PN junction.
The voltage that goes through the PN junction changes the bandgap energy state of electrons and holes (electronic charge carriers). When this happens, electron movement or hole movement occurs within silicon bands as shown in Figure 1.

What is the structure of LED?

There are RGB (red, green, and blue) LEDs, red and white LEDs used as indicators, UV (ultraviolet) diodes for sterilization equipment and germicidal lamps, infrared LEDs for TV remote control units, high power LEDs that have a lumen output over 1 W, mounted on heat sinks to improve heat dissipation performance.

Also LEDs emit white light by mixing blue and red or sometimes green but they don’t emit pure colors like RGB (red, green, blue) LED does. Moreover the chromaticity of the emitted color changes due to heat generation. But these problems can be solved with current technology in near future.
